THE DUTCH GOLD WAY

How we live shapes our living spaces, and living spaces shape how we live in them. We aim to make the experience of shaping how you live enjoyable, exciting and satisfying. To do this, we follow a process we have dubbed ‘The Dutch Gold Way’.

Step One – We start the design process with two priorities:

  • It is very important to discover what the present conditions are that need to be changed and what the change needs to accomplish. We do that by listening to how you use the space and what isn’t working for you.
  • The other priority is to solve those problems using the tools of good spatial design. We want to use alignment to emphasize definition of spaces. We consider things like proportion, balance, symmetry, dimensions, repetition, lighting and materials.

Step Two – After the direction is established, we need to determine limitations such as bylaws and building codes. Where necessary we determine lot lines, and invite engineering professionals to make sure we are in line with the requirements of the B.C. building code.

Step Three – When all the necessary information is gathered, we set out to answer the problems that initiated the need for change. Whether that be a new build, or a renovation, we will design a proposal that meets your requirements and makes use of good design practice.

Step Four – We’ll present you with an initial review. As a collaborative process, the mix between our proposal and your input is probably the most critical part of coming to a successful end. Sometimes this can take a number of meetings.

Step Five – Once the design is substantially complete, we can assist or represent you in applying for the necessary permits. As well, we have some familiarity with the local builders and renovators and can make introductions if needed.

About Me

I came to architectural design and drafting from a construction background. Growing up in small town Saskatchewan in a building contractor’s home gave me a view of home design that came, initially, from a practical and simple perspective.

Over the years, that perspective evolved. As a younger man, I worked in a ‘hands on’ capacity in construction. Later, as I became more and more interested in how the cold and empty shell of a ‘building’ became a ‘home’, my career took me to cabinet building. During my time of owning and operating a custom cabinet shop, I came to understand more about the use of space and the elements that made spaces functional as well as pleasant.

When I decided I wanted to expand my work beyond millwork design, I decided to enrol in architectural studies at Athabasca University.
Those studies are ongoing, and as they have progressed, I began to branch out into drafting and design work.

Drafting and Design Work

Since 2011, I have had the pleasure of working with interior designers, contractors, and home owners from St John to Vancouver, working on designs for a range of projects, including residential spaces for renovation and new home design.

I have also worked with commercial builders on renovation projects such as day care centers, fitness centers, car dealerships and a range of other interior commercial renovations.

Utilising a variety of CAD (computer assisted drafting) programs such as Chief Architect, AutoCad, Sketchup, and Decotech, I create plans, sections, elevations drawings, and 3D models which help my customers to properly visualize the space.

From design to drafting to permits, I offer a complete service. My background has given me a familiarity with the workings at City Hall, which helps to make the process smoother for my customers. Building code and bylaw issues are always a challenge and often become a source of stress for people who plan to build. Because of my years of experience with the building code, city bylaws and pulling permits and navigating the requirements at the city, much of the stress is taken out of the process.

Let’s make something amazing happen… together
